Video tutorials for ThoMat computational software tools allow for a deeper understanding on the theory of cyclic viscoplasticity of metallic materials at elevated temperatures and the fracture mechanics and mechanism-based damage parameter DTMF. In the video tutorials for the viscoplastic material models, typical material phenomena such as strain hardening, creep, relaxation and strain rate effects are explained in relation to their respective parameters in the material model. In addition to the "standard" model equations of the Chaboche-based material model, introductions to materials with tension-compression asymmetry, such as gray cast iron materials, and materials that show microstructural changes (aging) are given, and the respective model extensions are explained.
In the video tutorials the fracture and mechanism-based approach for the fatigue life estimation is explained, as well as the underlying mechanism of ductile crack growth. The videos also provide the derivation of the fracture mechanics-based relation between the cyclic crack tip opening displacement and the cyclic J-integral. Crack closure effects are discussed in the context of available crack closure models. The extension of the cyclic J-integral to the time-dependent damage parameter DTMF and the fatigue life estimation are illustrated, along with the extension of the model equations to account for superimposed loading, including additional brittle fracture contributions and environmental effects.
Further video tutorials explain the material cards for the cyclic viscoplasticity and the lifetime models as well as their application in the commercial finite element software Abaqus and Ansys.
